Greece: 20% rise in excise duty

 

With the aim of addressing the Greek national budget deficit, as of 8 January the Greek government has increased excise duties on certain products including beer.  The tax hike is included in the government’s reform programme to lead the country out of the economic crisis.

 

Tax on beer was already increased in February 2009, and following the January 2010 decision the new tax level for beer will be of €1.63 / hl / degree alcohol.

 

The excise duty rate on wine and other fermented beverages remains at 0 € / hectolitre, whereas tax on spirits was also increased by 20%.
